Advisor Prospecting — Sources & Directories

Finding independent financial planners across Canada. Start with Ontario, expand province by province.

Part 1: Official Regulatory Registries

Every licensed advisor must appear in these databases. The most complete and authoritative sources.

CSA National Registration Search (Securities — National)

  • URL: https://info.securities-administrators.ca/nrsmobile/nrssearch.aspx
  • Operated by: Canadian Securities Administrators
  • Search by: Individual name, firm name, or NRD number
  • Shows: Registration category, sponsoring firm, province(s), terms/conditions
  • How to find independents: The sponsoring firm tells you everything. Advisors under independent dealers (Worldsource, Sterling Mutuals, Manulife Securities, IPC) vs. bank-owned dealers (RBC Dominion Securities, TD Waterhouse). Also look for “Portfolio Manager” and “Exempt Market Dealer” registrants — often independent firms.
  • Every securities-licensed advisor in Canada is in this database.

OSC Registrant Search (Ontario)

CIRO AdvisorReport Search (National)

  • URL: https://www.ciro.ca/advisor-report-search
  • Operated by: Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (replaced IIROC and MFDA as of Jan 1, 2023)
  • Shows: Current dealer affiliation, registration history, disciplinary actions
  • Limitation: AdvisorReports only available for investment dealer reps, not mutual fund dealer reps. For mutual fund reps, use CSA.
  • Dealer list page: https://www.ciro.ca/office-investor/dealers-we-regulate — publishes a “List of CIRO Dealers by Peer Group” PDF that categorizes every dealer as Integrated (bank-owned), Retail Independent, Institutional, etc.

Conferences and events are prime networking opportunities. Sponsorship or speaking at CALU events would put Focura in front of the highest-value prospects.

Prospecting Strategy — Ontario First

  1. FSRA Open Data: Download the bulk list of all licensed life insurance agents and agencies in Ontario.
  2. CSA cross-reference: Identify which agents also hold securities licenses and with which dealers.
  3. Filter for independence: Remove bank-owned dealer affiliates and captive/career agents. Keep independent dealer and MGA affiliates.
  4. Enrich with designations: Check FP Canada (CFP/QAFP) and IAFE (CLU/CHS) to flag higher-value prospects.
  5. Priority layer: Add everyone from Make The Switch, Advice Only Planners, and MoneySense tool as first-contact prospects.
  6. Expand by province: Repeat using each province’s insurance regulator (via CCIR) and the CSA (already national).

Higher-Leverage Plays

  • MGA partnerships: IDC WIN, HUB Financial, Financial Horizons, PPI — recommended tool for their advisor networks.
  • Dealer partnerships: Worldsource, Sterling Mutuals, Canaccord Genuity — Focura integration.
  • Advocis chapter events: Present at local chapter meetings.
  • CALU conference: Sponsor or exhibit to reach elite estate planning advisors.
